Bacolod City: The city government here is conducting a comprehensive database profiling of public utility jeepney (PUJ) operators until May 9 as part of its collaboration with the Department of Transportation (DOTr) to develop a sustainable mass public transportation plan.
According to Philippines News Agency, the objective is to establish a more efficient, reliable, and environmentally sustainable public transport system, as stated by City Planning and Development Office head Mary Jean Ramos. The data-gathering initiative targets operators of registered modernized PUJs and those who have consolidated under the modernization program but have yet to comply with the necessary documentation required by the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board and Land Transportation Office. It also includes operators who have not consolidated and those currently operating on the streets.
The profiling of PUJ operators by route commenced on April 30, following the visit of Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon to the city on April 25. During Dizon's visit, discussions with Mayor Alfredo Abelardo Benitez highlighted the need to review the national government's Public Transport Modernization Program and identify gaps to address the concerns of operators, drivers, and passengers.
Additional topics discussed included the city's proposal to grant authority or deputize local government units to apprehend "colorum" or unauthorized vehicles, the approval and implementation of green routes, migration to electric vehicles (EVs), provision of financing options for e-jeepney operators, and the establishment of EV charging stations across the city.
Under the Local Public Transport Route Plan, Bacolod City has identified 24 routes for modernized jeepneys. Currently, at least 605 modern units are servicing these routes, along with 1,266 traditional jeepney units approved for consolidation. An initial assessment revealed a shortfall of approximately 1,200 units needed to adequately service the 24 routes.
