Libungan: Authorities arrested a suspected cigarette smuggler and seized PHP4.24 million worth of contraband during a law enforcement operation in Libungan, North Cotabato, on Sunday afternoon.
According to Philippines News Agency, Major Arnold Andaya, the Libungan municipal police chief, stated that the confiscated cigarettes lacked the required graphic health warnings. The seized brands included 'Forth' and 'Commando.'
The police acted on a tip-off and discovered the smuggled cigarettes stockpiled in Sitio Abacanhan, Barangay Cabaruyan. The contraband was found hidden in a cargo truck covered by a tarpaulin.
A suspect, identified as 'Alex,' was arrested at the scene after claiming ownership of the goods. The suspect is currently detained at the Libungan police station. Authorities are preparing charges for violating Republic Act 10643, or the Graphic Health Warnings Law.
