Manila: Weaknesses and abusive practices in the justice system are allowing corrupt public officials to escape accountability, a senator said Friday. In a radio interview, Sen. Francis Pangilinan stressed that the fight against corruption would not succeed without a functioning and accountable justice system, emphasizing that abusive practices within the judiciary contribute to a culture of impunity.
According to Philippines News Agency, Pangilinan noted that while abusive politicians and anomalous public works projects are often exposed, accountability ultimately depends on judicial action. Pangilinan, who chairs the Senate Committee on Justice and Human Rights, expressed concern that some public officials charged with plunder in the past were eventually acquitted, which weakens public trust in anti-corruption efforts.
Pangilinan remarked that while politicians and public works officials are well known, those who issue the acquittals remain anonymous. He clarified that his remarks were not meant to vilify the entire judiciary but to highlight the need for transparency and accountability among judges, particularly in high-profile corruption cases.
Pangilinan also urged the Supreme Court to discipline and dismiss corrupt or abusive members, reinforcing the call for reform within the judicial system.
