‘Crising’ Leaves P1.4-M Initial Agricultural Damage in La Union

La union: The province of La Union has incurred approximately PHP1.4 million in initial agricultural damage due to Severe Tropical Storm Crising, also known internationally as Wipha, according to the initial assessment from the La Union Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO).

According to Philippines News Agency, PDRRMO officer-in-charge David Ken Salamanca reported that approximately 281.8 hectares of rice fields were affected in the towns of Bacnotan, Bangar, and Agoo. The report indicated that a total of 2,506 families, comprising 8,471 individuals, were impacted by the storm. Of these, around 240 families, or 920 individuals, were evacuated, although most have since returned to their homes.

Flooding, minor landslides, and fallen trees were recorded in various parts of the province. A house in Bangar town was completely destroyed, while eight houses in Bacnotan, Balaoan, San Juan, Aringay, Bauang towns, and San Fernando City suffered partial damage.

The province has been on red alert status since July 18. All available rescue vehicles and assets were mobilized, including an ambulance, three high-lift off-road vehicles, a utility vehicle, a transport vehicle, a boom truck, a rescue truck, a jetski, and three rubber boats. Relief packs were distributed to those affected.

La Union Governor Mario Ortega has advised residents to remain vigilant, monitor weather bulletins, and coordinate with authorities to ensure their safety.
