CWC Encourages Youth to Compose Jingles for Children’s Rights Awareness

Manila: Through its nationwide 'Himig MAKABATA' Jingle Writing Contest, the Council for the Welfare of Children (CWC) is calling on young Filipinos who have a knack for catchy tunes to champion child protection, and remind every child that they are not alone. The contest urges teens to turn their personal stories and creative energy into a jingle that can help save lives.

According to Philippines News Agency, the CWC is inviting in-school and out-of-school Filipino youth to create original songs that amplify the message of child rights, protection, and empowerment, while promoting the MAKABATA Helpline 1383, the country's critical lifeline for reporting child abuse and exploitation. Unlike typical talent shows, the 'Himig MAKABATA' Jingle Writing Contest is all about using music for advocacy. Participants can join solo or as groups of up to three members. However, professional songwriters, producers, or audio engineers are not allowed as the contest is strictly for emerging young voices.

The challenge is to write an original jingle, 60 to 90 seconds long, in Filipino, English, or a mix of both, in any genre, as long as the song is lively, memorable, and appropriate for all audiences. A short write-up explaining the message behind the lyrics must accompany each entry. Entries will be screened by a panel of judges composed of experts in music, child protection advocacy, and communication. Entries will be judged based on originality, relevance to the theme, musicality, and impact.

The Top 10 finalists will be announced in September, while the awarding of winners will be held during National Children's Month celebrations in November. The grand prize winner will take home a cash prize of PHP50,000, second place gets PHP30,000, and third place gets PHP10,000, all with a plaque and certificate. The top 10 finalists will also each receive PHP2,500 and a certificate. The winning entries will be used in CWC campaigns to spread awareness, with full credit given to the young composers.

Participants must submit only one entry each. All submissions must be 100 percent original and never before published or entered in other competitions. The deadline for submission of entries is on July 30, 2025, at 12 noon. Late submissions will not be accepted.
