DA-11 Advocates Enhanced Support for Vegetable Industry Amid Challenges

Davao city: The Department of Agriculture-Davao Region (DA-11) has underscored the importance of strengthening the country's vegetable industry, citing its role in food security and economic growth while acknowledging persistent challenges faced by farmers. In his speech at the opening of the 20th National Vegetable Congress here on Tuesday, DA-11 Regional Director Macario Gonzaga recognized vegetables as vital commodities for both household consumption and the national economy.

According to Philippines News Agency, the agency noted that despite the industry's potential, farmers continue to grapple with oversupply in some areas, post-harvest losses, high input costs, climate change, pests and diseases, market volatility, and limited access to markets. 'DA is pursuing a more integrated and market-oriented approach covering production, consolidation, logistics, post-harvest handling, processing, marketing, and consumption,' Gonzaga said.

Through its High Value Crops Development Program (HVCDP), DA has continuously provided quality seeds and planting materials, farm inputs, machinery, greenhouses, nurseries, technical training, post-harvest equipment, irrigation support, and initiatives such as Gulayan sa Bayan. The DA-11's Agribusiness and Marketing Assistance Division is also connecting farmers directly with consumers through the 'Kadiwa ng Pangulo' program to expand market opportunities.

'This congress must be more than just a gathering. It should be a declaration of our collective commitment -- that we believe in our farmers, in Philippine agriculture, and in the potential of our vegetable industry to compete and grow in bigger markets,' Gonzaga said. Despite resource constraints, the agency assured continued support for farmers and stakeholders and pledged to strengthen the entire vegetable value chain 'from the farm to the market.'
