Manila: The Department of Agriculture (DA) announced on Wednesday that it will increase the maximum suggested retail price (MSRP) for red onions to PHP150 per kilogram starting December 11. This decision follows reports of slightly higher import prices and an increase in the landed cost from PHP60 to PHP80 per kilogram.

According to Philippines News Agency, Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. stated that importers have reported price hikes from major sources such as China, Poland, and India, necessitating an adjustment from the recently imposed PHP120 per kilogram limit. Laurel explained in an ambush interview that the previous MSRP of PHP120 would no longer suffice, prompting the increase to PHP150.

The DA had initially implemented a PHP120 per kilogram MSRP for both red and white onions on December 1. As the country approaches the holiday season, importers have expressed their willingness to adjust their wholesale prices to aid consumers. Laurel noted that discussions with importers focus on lowering selling prices and convincing retailers to reduce the prices of red onions from their current levels.

Laurel emphasized the importance of cooperation among stakeholders to assist consumers, particularly during the Christmas season, to ensure that goods remain reasonably priced. The MSRP for white onions will continue to be set at PHP120 per kilogram.
