Surigao del Sur: The Department of Agriculture in the Caraga Region (DA-13) and the Bureau of Animal Industry-National African Swine Fever Prevention and Program (BAI-NASFPCP) initiated a three-day awareness campaign on African Swine Fever (ASF) in Surigao del Sur. This effort commenced on Tuesday as part of a proactive approach to combat ASF in the region.
According to Philippines News Agency, data from DA-13 shows that 20 areas in the Caraga Region are designated as Pink Zones by DA-BAI due to ASF infection, out of a total of 498 areas nationwide. Pink Zones refer to locations where ASF has been partially contained or where eradication measures are actively being pursued, permitting limited livestock movement under strict guidelines.
Within the Caraga Region's Pink Zones, Surigao del Sur accounts for seven areas, while Agusan del Sur and Dinagat Islands have four each. Agusan del Norte has three, and Surigao del Norte has two areas classified under the same category.
The DA-13 emphasized in a statement that the campaign's sustained information efforts will concentrate on engaging local communities and livestock industry stakeholders in the province. The primary goal is to heighten public awareness, educate key sectors, and advocate for preventive measures to curb ASF spread.
Led by Dr. Princess Sherina Cunanan, the BAI-NASFPCP team convened with Regional Executive Director Arlan Mangelen and DA-13 technical personnel on Monday. The DA-13 remarked that this three-day initiative highlights the cooperative endeavor between national and regional bodies to protect the swine industry and ensure regional food security.
