Davao city: The Department of Agriculture (DA) 11 (Davao Region) announced that it has joined forces with the Department of Science and Technology - Philippine Nuclear Research Institute (DOST-PNRI) to enhance food safety and agricultural sustainability through advanced detection of heavy metals in crops.
According to Philippines News Agency, the collaboration was solidified through a memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed on May 4. It focuses on the initiative titled "Development and Application of Rapid, Non-Destructive Heavy Metal Detection Techniques in Plant Materials." The launch event featured demonstrations by DA-11 of equipment designed for the rapid, non-destructive detection of heavy metals in crops.
In a conversation with the Philippine News Agency, DA-11 Director Macario Gonzaga highlighted that the integration of DOST-PNRI's rapid testing technology aims to offer farmers faster validation of their produce while enhancing consumer confidence. Gonzaga emphasized the importance of securing the future of high-value crops such as coconut, mango, coffee, and corn through innovation and collaboration between science and agriculture.
The initiative addresses increasing concerns about heavy metal contamination in agricultural products by introducing technologies that enable efficient testing without harming plant samples. This innovation promises to speed up the screening process for crops like coconut, mango, banana, cacao, coffee, corn, and cabbage.
The agreement outlines a commitment by DA-11 and DOST-PNRI to pursue joint research and development efforts, guided by shared principles and a structured cooperation framework. The partnership aims to improve scientific and technical capabilities for contaminant detection while encouraging knowledge exchange between the two agencies.
Gonzaga noted that the collaboration highlights the critical role of integrating science and innovation into agriculture to tackle emerging environmental challenges, ensuring that locally produced crops remain safe, competitive, and sustainable.
