Dangerous Heat Index Threatens 26 Areas; ITCZ to Bring Rains Over Mindanao

Manila: Twenty-six areas in the country will experience high temperatures due to danger-level heat indices, while the intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ) will continue to bring rains across Mindanao, the weather bureau reported Thursday. According to Philippines News Agency, the heat index, which measures how the temperature feels to the human body when relative humidity combines with air, is expected to peak at 45°C in Dagupan City, Pangasinan, as per the 5 a.m. bulletin of the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA). Several areas will also experience danger-level heat indices, including Tuguegarao City, Cagayan, and Pangasinan with 43°C; Bacnotan, La Union at 43°C; Echague, Isabela, and Baler, Aurora both at 42°C; Iba, Zambales at 44°C; and various other locations where temperatures will range from 42°C to 44°C. Heat cramps and heat exhaustion are likely to occur when heat indices reach between 42°C and 51°C. Meanwhile, the ITCZ will bring scattered rains and thunderstorms to areas such as Surigao del Sur, Davao Oriental, Davao Occidental, Sarangani, Sultan Kudarat, Basilan, Sulu, and Tawi-Tawi. Flash floods or landslides are possible in these regions due to moderate to heavy rains, PAGASA added. The ITCZ will also continue to cause isolated rain showers or thunderstorms over the rest of Mindanao, while the rest of the country will experience isolated rain showers or thunderstorms due to the easterlies. Light to moderate winds and slight to moderate seas will continue to prevail across the archipelago.
