Davao CHO Warns Residents Over Rainy Season Diseases

Davao: The City Health Office (CHO) advised Dabawenyos on Wednesday to exercise additional caution during the rainy season, which increases the risk of illnesses such as waterborne infections, influenza-like illnesses, leptospirosis, and dengue, collectively known as W.I.L.D.

According to Philippines News Agency, in its latest advisory, the CHO reminded the public that contaminated water, flood exposure, and mosquito bites are common sources of disease during heavy rains. Waterborne diseases may be contracted through unsafe drinking water, whereas influenza-like illnesses often present with fever, cough, and body pain.

Leptospirosis, meanwhile, is spread through floodwater contaminated with rat urine, while dengue is transmitted by the Aedes aegypti mosquito. To prevent outbreaks, the CHO encouraged Dabawenyos to monitor weather updates and advisories and to stay indoors when sick or during heavy rains.

CHO also recommended reducing mosquito breeding by engaging in practices like 'TAOB, TATTAK, TUYO, TAKIP'-which include turning over containers, covering water storage, drying wet areas, and sealing potential breeding sites. 'A doctor's consultation is advised at the first sign of symptoms,' the CHO added.
