Davao City Logs 94 Leptospirosis Cases, Offers Free Meds

Davao City: The City Health Office (CHO) has recorded a total of 94 leptospirosis cases since last year, resulting in 25 fatalities, prompting health officials to issue a fresh warning as the rainy season progresses. In an interview on Tuesday, Dr. Sofia Corazon Zafra, medical coordinator for the CHO's City Emerging and Re-emerging Infectious Diseases, cautioned Dabawenyos about the heightened risks of acquiring leptospirosis during this period.

According to Philippines News Agency, post-exposure prophylaxis medicines are readily available for free at all barangay and district health centers across the city. Leptospirosis is a zoonotic disease caused by the Leptospira bacteria, which can be transmitted to humans through contact with infected animal urine or through contaminated water or soil.

Zafra urged Dabawenyos who have been exposed to floodwaters to immediately and thoroughly wash the exposed area, and then proceed to the nearest health center within 24 hours of exposure. 'If you were exposed to floodwaters, immediately visit the nearest health center to receive prophylaxis,' she said.

Zafra said individuals can still contract leptospirosis even without visible wounds on their feet. 'It is crucial to receive prophylaxis to prevent infection. Dabawenyos are also strongly urged to avoid self-medicating,' she added.

Zafra underscored the importance of going directly to a health center to receive the correct type and dosage of prophylaxis if exposed to floodwater.
