Dead Blue Shark Washes Ashore in Aurora, Prompting Immediate Action

Aurora: A dead male blue shark (Prionace glauca) was discovered on the shoreline of Barangay Lipit, triggering a swift response from local officials and marine authorities. The incident, which took place on Saturday morning, raised concerns about marine life in the area.

According to Philippines News Agency, the shark was found at 10 a.m. by a local resident, Danilo Dupale, who quickly notified village officials, the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, and the Municipal Agriculture Office. Luzviminda Ramos, a staff member of the Municipal Agriculture Office, confirmed the discovery and collaborated with the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) to ensure proper handling of the situation.

BFAR technician Aylwin Kelsey Abando reported that the shark measured 2.7 meters in length with a circumference of 0.96 meters and an estimated weight of 60 to 70 kilograms. The photos and data collected were sent to the BFAR Regional Office, which identified the species as a male blue shark, typically found in deep offshore waters.

To mitigate any potential health risks, the BFAR ordered the carcass to be buried in a three-meter deep pit near the site where it was found. Authorities have since been monitoring the coastline and are urging residents to report any similar incidents.
