Manila: The death of ranking New People's Army (NPA) leader Myrna Sularte, alias Maria Malaya, is expected to help bring peace and progress not only to Mindanao but also to the rest of the country, according to Philippine Army commander Lt. Gen. Roy Galido.
According to Philippines News Agency, Sularte, who served as the secretary of the NPA's Northeastern Mindanao Regional Committee (NEMRC), was killed in an encounter with soldiers in Barangay Pianing, Butuan City. The incident occurred on Wednesday, as reported by the Army's 4th Infantry Division.
Lt. Gen. Galido stated that Sularte was the wife of the former CTG's National Operations Command and Komisyong Mindanao terrorist leader, Jorge "Ka Oris" Madlos. She was considered the successor of former top CTG leaders, Wilma and Benito Tiamzon, who were also neutralized in previous combat operations.
Galido emphasized that Sularte's death signifies a new era and a beacon of hope in the pursuit of lasting peace and progress. He expressed the importance of this event as a pivotal step towards true healing and reconciliation in the effort to secure the nation.
The Army chief extended his gratitude to the Filipino people and various sectors of society who have supported the "whole-of-nation approach" to put an end to the long-standing communist terrorism. He also commended the troops for their sacrifice, heroism, and successful operations, particularly in conflict-affected and geographically isolated areas.
