Manila: ZUS Coffee banked on the explosive performance of import Anna DeBeer to pull off a stunning 25-27, 25-17, 25-20, 25-22 victory over defending champion Creamline in the Premier Volleyball League (PVL) Reinforced Conference at the FilOil EcoOil Arena in San Juan City on Thursday night. DeBeer delivered 37 points off 35 attacks and two blocks as the Thunderbelles rolled to their third straight win and moved a step closer to clinching a Top 3 berth in Pool B.
According to Philippines News Agency, Michelle Gamit's block on DeBeer's backrow attack put the Creamline ahead, 18-16, in the fourth set. But ZUS Coffee held a 9-4 run capped by Alexis Miner's back-to-back hits to seal the win in one hour and 57 minutes.
'It was really tough, but it was a total team effort all the way,' said DeBeer, who also made 15 excellent receptions. 'We did a good job at the service line, and our blocking made a big difference. Staying balanced was huge for us,' said the American hitter, who scored 37 and 18 points in ZUS Coffee's first two matches.
Cloanne Mondonedo did an impressive job running the offense, setting up different players at the right moments, as noted by DeBeer. Mondonedo turned in an impressive 25-excellent set performance, upstaging counterpart Kyle Negrito, who finished with 14.
Courtney Rose Schwan finished with 18 points, followed by skipper Alyssa Valdez with 13 points as Creamline dropped to 2-2. Jeanette Panaga and Diana Mae Carlos contributed 11 points each, and Michelle Gumabao had 10 points for the Cool Smashers, who gave away 25 points on unforced errors while gaining only 14 off the Thunderbelles' mistakes.
