Deceased Organ Donation Integrated as Core Responsibility by Physicians

Manila: The Philippine College of Physicians (PCP) has formally integrated deceased organ and tissue donation into the core of medical practice, describing it as an "essential professional responsibility" for doctors managing end-of-life care. In a statement on Tuesday, the organization emphasized that a physician's duty transforms rather than ends when curative medicine reaches its limits.

According to Philippines News Agency, the PCP highlighted that at critical junctures, a physician's responsibility is to ensure that every patient receives care that upholds dignity, relieves suffering, and honors the patient's values and wishes. It underscored the importance of providing families the opportunity to consider organ donation as a fundamental component of holistic, patient-centered care.

The PCP further expressed that deceased organ and tissue donation represents a profound expression of compassion and human solidarity. Through the generosity of one life, many others may be saved, restored, or given renewed hope. To institutionalize this practice, the PCP has committed to a three-pronged agenda aimed at advancing the national organ donation program.

This agenda includes ensuring competence by equipping internists and healthcare professionals with the clinical skills and ethical grounding necessary to manage potential donors and support grieving families. It also emphasizes the importance of strengthening public trust by promoting a culture that recognizes organ donation as an ethical and socially vital act among physicians and the Filipino public. Additionally, the PCP is focused on advancing policy by advocating for transparent and effective national and institutional procedures for organ donation and transplantation.

The organization asserted that the clinical identification, referral, and medical management of potential donors must now be recognized as a core component of critical care practice. The PCP stands firmly in its commitment to uphold the dignity of every patient at the end of life, to support families with compassion, and to champion organ donation as a noble legacy, where even in death, life may continue in others.
