DENR Region 8 Launches Guiuan Marine Scientific Research Station Project

Guiuan: The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) has initiated the establishment of the Guiuan Marine Scientific Research Station (MSRS) in Barangay Baras, Guiuan, Eastern Samar. The facility is set to become a central hub for marine research, training, and scientific collaboration in the Eastern Visayas region.

According to Philippines News Agency, the Guiuan MSRS is designed to facilitate the study of marine biodiversity and coastal ecosystems. It aims to generate essential scientific data to aid in the protection, conservation, and sustainable utilization of marine and coastal resources. The station is also expected to host capacity-building activities, offering training opportunities for researchers, local government officials, students, and coastal communities.

The facility's objectives include supporting science-based policymaking, enhancing climate change resilience planning, and promoting the sustainable development of fisheries and ecotourism. These efforts are anticipated to directly benefit local fisherfolk and nearby coastal communities by fostering community engagement and inter-agency cooperation.

DENR Regional Executive Director Arturo Salazar highlighted that the research station, once operational, will enhance collaboration among government agencies, academic institutions, and local stakeholders. It will serve as a venue for field research and focus on marine conservation and resource management. The Guiuan MSRS will occupy a 1,796-square-meter site, contributing to the country's network of marine biogeographic regions.
