DEPDev Calls for Enhanced International Trade Amid Global Challenges

Manila:The Department of Economy, Planning, and Development (DEPDev) has taken steps to strengthen international trade and cooperation as global uncertainty rises.

According to Philippines News Agency, DEPDev Secretary Arsenio Balisacan emphasized the need for improved trade and partnerships during the 2026 Autumn Economic Forum (AEF). Balisacan highlighted the importance of not retreating from economic integration but instead enhancing resilience through continuous trade and investments.

Balisacan noted that economies must adapt to changing conditions and reduce over-dependence. He identified several key growth drivers requiring a robust business ecosystem, including advancements in artificial intelligence, advanced manufacturing, digital services, and the green transition. These areas necessitate support in infrastructure, innovation, skills, and connectivity.

Regional partnerships are also considered essential to help economies meet challenging targets. For the Philippines, DEPDev is focusing on advancing energy security and connectivity through initiatives such as the ASEAN Framework Agreement on Petroleum Security and the ASEAN Power Grid.

Additionally, the Philippines is working towards formalizing the ASEAN Digital Economy Framework Agreement (DEFA) by November, which aims to facilitate cross-border digital trade and expand opportunities for micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) across Southeast Asia.
