DepEd Iloilo Plans Temporary Learning Spaces for Fire-Damaged School

Iloilo City: The Department of Education (DepEd) Schools Division of Iloilo is considering the establishment of 10 temporary learning spaces to ensure learning continuity following a fire that destroyed several classrooms at Alimodian National Comprehensive High School in Alimodian town. The fire occurred on Monday, leading to significant damage.

According to Philippines News Agency, Schools Division Superintendent Dr. Ernesto Servillon Jr. announced on Wednesday that the temporary classrooms are intended to serve as an interim solution while long-term reconstruction plans are being developed. Servillon inspected the damaged areas on Tuesday and a comprehensive rehabilitation plan has been formulated.

The Schools Division of Iloilo reported that over PHP4.19 million from regional standby response funds will be allocated to execute the rehabilitation plan. This includes not only the setup of temporary classrooms but also clearing operations to remove debris and hazardous materials. Additionally, the funds will cover the procurement of 10 complete teachers' kits, 10 play kits for affected grade levels, and the installation of temporary water, sanitation, and hygiene facilities.

Servillon emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating, "Every minute counts in restoring normalcy for our affected students." To expedite the rehabilitation, Servillon, along with DepEd Regional Education Support Services Division chief Leonerico Barredo and disaster specialists, met with Alimodian Mayor Ian Kenneth Alfeche. The Mayor expressed the local government's readiness to assist with the school's rehabilitation.

Authorities estimated the fire, which broke out early Monday morning, caused damage worth PHP14 million. The blaze razed 14 rooms, including a canteen and a clinic, while partially damaging the school's gymnasium.
