DepEd Introduces 5-Point Agenda to Tackle Philippine Education Challenges.

Manila: The Department of Education (DepEd) has formulated a 5-point agenda aimed to address major issues in the Philippine basic education system. In a news release on Tuesday, the DepEd said the strategic plan is anchored on the directive of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. to ensure an enabling learning environment, the welfare of teachers, the well-being of learners, an efficient learning delivery in all its forms, and a future-ready workforce. According to Philippines News Agency, the agenda comes in response to significant student learning losses, as evidenced by poor test performance in the recent Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA). Results indicated that 9 out of 10 Filipino learners struggle with reading or comprehending simple text. In addition, DepEd highlighted the urgent need to tackle the issue of teacher shortage and improve working conditions. This includes reviewing policies and responses that affect educators, particularly during calamities and emergencies. Education Se cretary Sonny Angara emphasized that this priority agenda will be pursued with urgency through the remainder of this year. The Department of Education stated that the 5-Point Agenda will play a crucial role in implementing long-planned initiatives. These initiatives include the decentralization of funds and resources, the revival of Public-Private Partnerships for infrastructure, and the acceleration of digital adoption, which are essential for transforming the education landscape in the Philippines.
