Metro manila: The Department of Education (DepEd) on Wednesday issued a warning about fraudulent activities targeting the Senior High School (SHS) voucher program. This alert follows a decision by the Regional Trial Court (RTC) in Metro Manila, which convicted an individual for attempting to defraud the SHS-VP by submitting falsified billing statements.

According to Philippines News Agency, DepEd Secretary Sonny Angara emphasized that the agency will not tolerate any fraudulent scheme. He stated, "While we respect due process, this ruling sends an unmistakable signal: we will not tolerate anyone cheating our public system."

The RTC's decision resulted in the accused receiving a sentence of up to 14 years, eight months, and two days of imprisonment, alongside a fine of PHP100,000 for two counts of fraud. While the decision can still be appealed, the DepEd made it clear that those seeking to exploit government education aid programs, such as the SHS-VP, will be held accountable.

"The Senior High School Voucher Program was built to give students opportunities, not to line the pockets of fraudsters," Angara reiterated. He also pledged to strengthen safeguards against fraudulent activities to ensure the protection of public funds.

Additionally, Angara assured that legal actions will be pursued against individuals who misuse or attempt to misuse the SHS-VP budget and other educational assistance programs.
