Manila:The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) has issued a strong rebuke to the Chinese Embassy, condemning its recent 'escalatory and undiplomatic' social media posts. The DFA warned that these remarks could undermine mutual trust and the ongoing efforts to stabilize bilateral relations between the Philippines and China.
According to Philippines News agency, DFA spokesperson Analyn Ratonel emphasized the importance of foreign diplomats in the Philippines conducting themselves appropriately, even on social media platforms. Ratonel stated that the embassy's recent public statements do not align with the longstanding tradition of constructive engagement between the two nations and their foreign ministries.
The DFA's statement highlighted that such remarks are not conducive to fostering good relations or facilitating effective diplomatic functions. It also asserted that the Philippines reserves the right to take further diplomatic actions if deemed necessary. Despite the rebuke, the DFA reaffirmed its commitment to the One China policy, acknowledging Beijing's stance that there is only one China and that Taiwan is part of Chinese territory.
This diplomatic tension follows a recent incident involving Foreign Affairs Secretary Ma. Theresa Lazaro, who summoned Chinese Ambassador Jing Quan on October 15. The summons was in response to remarks suggesting that China could easily win a conflict through force but chose not to do so. Lazaro criticized these comments as 'provocative and unacceptable,' further urging foreign missions to refrain from publicly criticizing or taunting Philippine officials and lawmakers performing their official duties.
The DFA underscored that as a democratic nation, the Philippines values freedom of expression and a diversity of opinions and will not tolerate attempts by foreign envoys to intimidate those exercising these rights.
