DFA Disappointed Over Timor-Leste’s Refusal to Extradite Teves

Manila: The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) has expressed disappointment over Timor-Leste's decision to deny the Philippine government's request to extradite former Representative Arnolfo "Arnie" Teves Jr. The DFA spokesperson revealed the sentiment on Thursday, highlighting concerns about trust in the Philippines' justice system.

According to Philippines News Agency, Ma. Teresita Daza, a spokesperson for the DFA, stated that this decision indicates a lack of trust from Timor-Leste in the Philippines' judiciary. Daza emphasized the Philippines' role as a founding member of the ASEAN and its support for Timor-Leste's aspirations to join the association. The spokesperson pointed out that the decision could affect Timor-Leste's application for ASEAN membership, which requires compliance with the ASEAN Charter and a demonstration of shared trust and cooperation.

Teves is facing multiple murder charges related to the killing of Negros Oriental Governor Roel Degamo and five others in March 2023. On March 20, Timor-Leste's Court of Appeals rejected the extradition request from the Philippine government, citing concerns over potential risks of torture or inhumane treatment.

In a previous Palace briefing, Presidential Communications Office Undersecretary Claire Castro reiterated that such practices are prohibited under Philippine law.
