San jose de buenavista: The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) is calling on Antique±os to demonstrate responsible digital citizenship by ensuring that the information they share on Facebook is factual and not harmful. This appeal is part of efforts to promote cyber awareness during the National Cybersecurity Month in Region 6, specifically within the province of Antique.
According to Philippines News Agency, DICT Antique Provincial Director Joemar Magbanua emphasized the importance of considering the public impact before posting on social media. During two forums organized as part of the cybersecurity observance, Magbanua highlighted the necessity for responsible online behavior to prevent individuals from facing cyber libel charges due to defamatory or misleading content.
The forums, held on Wednesday and Thursday, targeted different audiences: students from the University of Antique, information officers, and local media representatives. The sessions were aimed at spreading awareness down to the grassroots level, encouraging community members to refrain from spreading misinformation and disinformation.
Roy Zabala, head of the DICT Regional Office 6 Cybersecurity Unit, noted that online scams are a common complaint. He mentioned the establishment of a Cybersecurity Unit at the Antique Provincial Police Office, which will streamline the process for filing complaints, eliminating the need for individuals to travel to the Police Regional Office 6 in Iloilo City.
Zabala also clarified the limitations of the DICT, explaining that while they can provide guidance, enforcement of cyber laws falls under the jurisdiction of the Philippine National Police or the National Bureau of Investigation.
The Philippine Information Agency - Antique facilitated the forum for information officers and media members, contributing to the broader effort to cultivate a digitally responsible community in Antique.
