Manila: The Provincial Health Office (PHO) of Dinagat Islands has denied circulating reports of confirmed mpox cases (monkeypox) in the province. In a public advisory issued Monday, the PHO clarified that no laboratory-confirmed mpox cases have been detected in the area, despite social media posts last week claiming otherwise.
According to Philippines News Agency, the advisory highlighted the presence of mpox cases in neighboring regions, which poses an imminent threat, underscoring the importance of continued vigilance among residents. The PHO advised the public to adopt preventive measures such as regular disinfection of surfaces, wearing face masks, and observing proper hygiene practices to mitigate any potential spread.
Mpox is primarily spread through respiratory droplets, direct skin contact, bodily fluids, and contaminated materials. The advisory also noted that mpox symptoms are often confused with those of chickenpox, a more common ailment during the hot, dry season from March to May.
In a separate message, Dinagat Islands Governor Nilo Demerey Jr. confirmed that two suspected cases were recorded last week but were subsequently diagnosed as chickenpox following laboratory testing. Governor Demerey assured the public that the provincial government has contingencies in place should an mpox case be confirmed.
As of this report, the PHO continues to closely monitor the situation in collaboration with regional and national health authorities.
