Manila: President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. continued to pursue immediate solutions to the country's pressing challenges this week, putting disaster response at the forefront of his engagements, while also advancing peace, education, and innovation agendas.
According to Philippines News Agency, Marcos began the week with a meeting with Cabinet officials and other government agencies at Malaca±an Palace in Manila on Monday to assess the flooding situation in Central Luzon and the health response in Metro Manila.
The meeting came as the government intensified efforts to address the impact of severe flooding on affected communities amid persistent rains. On Wednesday, the President embarked on a day-long inspection of flood-hit areas in Tarlac, Zambales, and Pampanga to assess infrastructure damage and check the delivery of government assistance to affected residents.
Marcos inspected the damaged Aquino and Agana bridges in Tarlac City, and the Sto. Cristo Dam in Lubao, Pampanga. He announced a PHP300 million assistance for the repair of the Agana Bridge and ordered the swift restoration of transportation connectivity in the area. A temporary Bailey bridge was installed to provide an immediate alternative route, while rehabilitation is underway. Marcos also visited affected communities and evacuation centers in Zambales and Pampanga, where he led the distribution of family food packs and cash assistance. The visit highlighted the administration's continuing response to communities affected by severe weather, including efforts to assess damaged infrastructure, provide immediate assistance, and ensure the safety of displaced families. Marcos has repeatedly emphasized the importance of pursuing both immediate and long-term measures to strengthen the country's resilience to increasingly severe weather events.
The President also marked key milestones in the country's peace process during the opening of the 2026 National Peace Consciousness Month. The event commemorated the 30th anniversary of the signing of the 1996 Final Peace Agreement between the Philippine government and the Moro National Liberation Front and the 40th anniversary of the 1986 Mount Data Peace Accord between the government and the Cordillera Bodong Administration - Cordillera People's Liberation Army. The commemoration underscored the administration's continuing efforts to preserve peace gains and promote reconciliation and inclusive development in conflict-affected communities.
On Thursday, Marcos led the 2026 Presidential Filipinnovation Awards (PFA) National Competition awarding ceremony in Quezon City, recognizing five outstanding Filipino innovations. Marcos urged all innovators to work with the government in addressing pressing challenges, such as food insecurity, flooding, soil erosion, and energy shortages. The President highlighted innovation as a key component of the country's economic transformation, productivity, and competitiveness. He also assured Filipino innovators of continued government support as they develop, scale up, and commercialize their products and solutions.
Marcos ended the week by signing a new law amending the Universal Access to Quality Tertiary Education Act, strengthening government support for students pursuing higher education. The amended law expands the coverage of the Tertiary Education Subsidy by including assistance for internships and required related learning experiences, professional licensure expenses, and allowances for students with disabilities. It also allows a one-year extension for program completion under justifiable circumstances, providing additional support to students facing difficulties in completing their studies within the prescribed period.
Marcos also led the celebration of the 58th founding anniversary of the 250th Presidential Airlift Wing (PAW) at the Philippine Air Force Multipurpose Gymnasium in Pasay City. He recognized the PAW's role in providing mobility for the President, government personnel and other government officials during official, emergency, and humanitarian missions. He cited the Wing's importance in enabling the government to reach communities affected by disasters and deliver assistance when and where it is needed most.
Marcos also led the observance of National Heroes Day at the Libingan ng mga Bayani in Fort Bonifacio, Taguig City on Monday, where he called on Filipinos to embody the national heroes' courage by 'keeping the flame of patriotism alive, and becoming the citizens our country needs.' On Tuesday, Marcos administered the oath of office to the newly promoted flag officers of the Philippine Coast Guard at Malaca±an, where he urged them to lead with courage and integrity as they take on greater responsibilities in protecting Filipinos and the country's waters.
Marcos also inspected preparations at the Philippine International Convention Center in Pasay City on Thursday for the upcoming 49th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit and Related Summits, underscoring the country's readiness to host regional leaders and advance its diplomatic engagements.
