Pampanga: The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) on Friday announced that upstream flood-control interventions along the Pampanga River will begin soon as part of efforts to reduce flooding in vulnerable communities. Public Works Secretary Vince Dizon stated that the projects align with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.'s directive to enhance flood-control measures in the Pampanga River basin, aiming to protect riverside barangays from severe flooding.
According to Philippines News Agency, Dizon highlighted the importance of creating solutions upstream, with plans to construct five dams and detention basins by 2027. These structures are expected to significantly mitigate water flow, reducing the risk of flooding downstream. Dizon also mentioned that the DPWH is expediting the installation of gabions in Barangay Candating and 24-meter sheet piles in Barangay Cupang, which will reinforce riverbanks and prevent erosion.
The projects are designed to safeguard flood-prone communities in Arayat and the neighboring localities of Mexico and San Fernando in Pampanga. Dizon, accompanied by Vice Gov. Dennis 'Delta' Pineda, inspected ongoing flood-control works in Pampanga on Friday. The DPWH chief noted that the upstream interventions are part of a broader strategy to improve water management and bolster the province's defenses against recurring floods.
