DMW Probes Shipping of Wrong Remains to Deceased OFW’s Kin

Makati City: The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) is investigating and determining possible legal liabilities over the mistake in the repatriation of the remains of overseas Filipino worker (OFW) Jenny Alvarado from Kuwait. Migrant Workers Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac apologized to the Alvarado family over the incident.

According to Philippines News Agency, Secretary Cacdac stated that their lawyers are currently studying the situation to identify any legal claims that could be pursued against those responsible for the oversight. He emphasized his commitment to the family, ensuring them that legal action would be taken if liabilities are found. Cacdac acknowledged his role in the situation, as he had requested the expedited repatriation of Alvarado's remains, which may have contributed to the error.

Initial reports from the Philippine Embassy in Kuwait revealed that Jenny Alvarado and two other foreign workers died from coal suffocation on January 2, after inhaling smoke from a heating system at their workplace. However, upon arrival of the remains on January 10, Alvarado's family discovered it was not Jenny.

Secretary Cacdac explained that the directive to expedite the repatriation led to a mistake by the private shipping service provider, who repatriated the wrong remains under Jenny's name. He assured the family that the DMW would acquire police and autopsy reports to determine further actions related to her death.

Jenny's remains are expected to arrive on Thursday, as confirmed by Cacdac, who expressed his full responsibility for the incident and reiterated his apology to the family.
