DMW to Investigate Manning Agency of Seafarers Released in Malaysia

Mandaluyong City: The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) is set to conduct its own investigation into the licensed manning agency and the shipowner that employed eight Filipino seafarers who were detained, and subsequently released, in Malaysia. This investigation aims to determine accountability and strengthen protective mechanisms for overseas Filipino workers (OFWs).

According to Philippines News Agency, Migrant Workers Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac announced the investigation in a news release. He emphasized the need to understand the circumstances surrounding the incident, especially since the main culprit was released earlier than the rest. Cacdac met with the seafarers and their families, assuring them of ongoing government support.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has shown concern for the seafarers and their families, frequently inquiring about their well-being. The government remains committed to monitoring the welfare of each OFW, with continued assistance assured. One of the seafarers expressed gratitude, acknowledging the government's support during their ordeal, which left them uncertain of their safety.

The eight Filipino seafarers, along with 12 Indian crew members of the crude oil tanker MT Krishna 1, were arrested by the Royal Malaysian Police in Johor on April 11 for alleged immigration offenses. The Migrant Workers Office-Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (MWO-OWWA) Malaysia promptly coordinated with local authorities to ensure the seafarers' welfare.

The licensed manning agency and the principal involved cooperated with the police investigation and guaranteed the ongoing payment of salaries and benefits to the seafarers and their families. The DMW-MWO-OWWA provided welfare and legal assistance, presenting a defense of good faith on behalf of the seafarers.

Following their release on April 18, the seafarers were repatriated to the Philippines on April 21. They received financial assistance from the DMW's AKSYON Fund and learning vouchers from the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority for skills training and other job opportunities.
