Manila: The Land Transportation Office (LTO) 6 (Western Visayas) has issued show cause orders (SCOs) to five drivers and a jeepney operator for violations reported during the Holy Week. The announcement was made on Tuesday, highlighting the agency's commitment to enforcing traffic regulations.
According to Philippines News Agency, the SCOs were directed at Robert Alemania, the driver of a jeepney involved in an incident on Black Saturday, and the operator, Maria Fe Gayamo. LTO records indicate that the private jeepney was overloaded with 70 passengers, with some individuals positioned on top of the vehicle and others standing on the stepboard. Alemania lost control of the vehicle on the downhill road in Barangay Dingle, Miagao, Iloilo.
Both Alemania and Gayamo must provide explanations to avoid the vehicle being placed on alarm. Alemania is further required to justify why he should not face a ban from obtaining a driver's license due to this incident. The LTO Information Technology System revealed that Alemania was driving with an expired student driver's permit issued on August 29, 2014, and had never been issued a non-professional driver's license. The show cause order, signed by LTO legal officer Tanya Lynne Diestro and Director Gaudioso Geduspan II, emphasized the lack of a valid driver's license at the time of the incident on April 9, 2025.
Additionally, four other public utility vehicle drivers received show cause orders after testing positive for illegal drugs during the 'Oplan Harabas' operation conducted by the LTO and the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency in Iloilo City's Mohon and Ceres terminals on April 15. Confirmatory testing by PDEA verified the presence of illegal drugs in the urine samples. These drivers face the potential revocation or suspension of their professional driver's licenses if they fail to provide satisfactory explanations within five days of receiving the order.
