Manila: Department of National Defense (DND) Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. has criticized China for the actions of its maritime forces against Filipino fisherfolk in Escoda Shoal, which is also known as Sabina Shoal, located in the West Philippine Sea.

According to Philippines News Agency, Teodoro condemned the use of water cannons, aggressive maneuvering, and the cutting of anchor lines by Chinese forces, which led to physical injuries among Filipino civilians. He stated that these actions are inconsistent with the responsibility of all nations to ensure the safety of human lives.

The incident occurred on December 12, when China Coast Guard ships harassed artisanal Filipino fishers in Escoda Shoal, a location 70 nautical miles from mainland Palawan and within the Philippines' exclusive economic zone. Teodoro criticized the spokesperson of China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs for attempting to justify these actions by citing 'indisputable sovereignty' and spreading unfounded claims, such as the presence of 'knife-wielding' fishermen.

Teodoro urged China to cease spreading false narratives and engaging in state-orchestrated disinformation campaigns. He emphasized the importance of responsible behavior by states aspiring for regional leadership and reiterated that maritime entitlements in the area are governed by the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and the 2016 Arbitral Award, which he stated is final and binding.

Teodoro also rejected China's assertion that other nations have 'no right' to comment or respond to the situation. He contrasted this with the Philippines' approach, stating, "Unlike China, we in the Philippines don't silence dissent with violence and intimidation."
