Manila:A group of doctors has called on the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) to launch an investigation into Dr. Anthony Leachon over alleged ethics violations related to his public medical claims and statements against other medical professionals.
According to Philippines News agency, during a press conference in Manila, concerns were raised regarding the scientific basis of Leachon's statements on the dengue vaccine controversy and his interpretation of alleged vaccine-related conditions. The group also questioned accusations of unethical conduct made by Leachon against his colleagues.
Dr. Kenneth Hartigan-Go, a former Department of Health (DOH) Undersecretary, emphasized the responsibility of physicians to provide accurate and evidence-based medical information to the public. Dr. Socorro Lupisan, a former Research Institute for Tropical Medicine director, highlighted the importance of professional accountability, especially when comments pertain to public health or the reputation of fellow practitioners.
The group's call for investigation follows disciplinary actions from the Philippine College of Physicians, which previously suspended Leachon's membership for six months due to his public statements against other medical professionals. Leachon has contested this decision in court.
The doctors allege that Leachon's remarks on the 2017 Dengvaxia controversy have undermined public trust in the DOH and vaccines, noting that other countries did not report deaths attributed to Dengvaxia at that time. Maria Lourdes Santiago, former Food and Drug Administration director general, stressed that irresponsible statements from medical professionals can significantly impact public trust in health authorities.
Former DOH secretary Janette Garin attributed vaccine hesitancy to misinformation, noting that the Philippines' child immunization rate currently falls short of the World Health Organization's target. The group maintains that scientific disagreement and criticism of government policies should be protected, but medical claims require verifiable evidence.
The doctors have offered to submit documentation to the PRC and other authorities, seeking a fair review process. They urged the public and media to rely on verified records and allow relevant institutions to determine the presence of any professional or legal violations.
In response, Dr. Leachon acknowledged the investigation call on social media, expressing his hope that the probe would not be used to intimidate those advocating for justice. He reiterated his commitment to patient protection and truth in public health, stating that his comments were intended to address accountability and transparency issues. Leachon expressed regret that efforts to support victims are perceived as harassment and reaffirmed his dedication to speaking out for public health and patient welfare.
