Quezon City:Veteran journalist Philip Lustre was arrested following his attendance at a news forum in Quezon City on Saturday, amidst allegations of being denied due process due to a mishandled subpoena, according to Prosecutor General Richard Anthony Fadullon.
According to Philippines News agency, Lustre, 71, a known critic of the Duterte administration, is currently facing charges of cyberlibel. Prosecutor General Fadullon acknowledged in a media interview that Lustre was not given the opportunity to respond to the charges due to the subpoena being sent to an incorrect address.
Lustre's lawyer, Dino de Leon, highlighted discrepancies in the address listed on the arrest warrant issued by a Davao City court, which differed from the address on the subpoena. Fadullon criticized the prosecutor's lack of due diligence in verifying the address provided, suggesting that the prosecutor should have validated the respondent’s location.
Fadullon also mentioned that the Department of Justice might consider launching an investigation into potential procedural errors that resulted in the issuance of the arrest warrant without allowing Lustre to submit a counter-affidavit.
