Iloilo city: The Department of Energy (DOE) is expediting the implementation of 22 renewable energy projects, encompassing energy storage initiatives. Presidential Communications Office Undersecretary and Palace Press Officer Claire Castro announced the development during a press briefing in Iloilo City. These projects comprise 12 solar initiatives, six hydro-electric plants, two biomass facilities, one wind project, and one integrated renewable energy system.

According to Philippines News Agency, the DOE's focus on alternative energy sources comes as a strategic response to the ongoing oil crisis. In her briefing, Castro highlighted the government's efforts to mitigate the impact of rising fuel prices on middle-income earners. These measures, she clarified, do not include direct cash assistance.

The government's interventions include a 50 percent fare discount on Light Rail Transit and Metro Rail Transit systems, benefiting primarily middle-income commuters. Additional measures involve the suspension of excise taxes on liquefied petroleum gas and kerosene. Furthermore, agencies like the Social Security System (SSS), Government Service Insurance System (GSIS), and Pag-IBIG Fund have implemented support measures to assist their members.

Castro detailed that the SSS has dispensed PHP60 billion in financial assistance and benefit services through various loan programs and has offered condonation of loan penalties and delinquent employer contributions to avoid additional penalties. Meanwhile, GSIS is executing the Balik Ginhawa Program, and Pag-IBIG is offering a special benefit package specifically for repatriated migrant workers.
