Manila: The Department of Energy (DOE) has urged Filipinos to participate in Earth Hour 2025 by turning off non-essential lights and electrical appliances. This symbolic gesture aims to raise awareness of climate change and environmental issues on Saturday.
According to Philippines News Agency, the DOE is also encouraging Filipinos to conserve water, highlighting the interdependence of energy and water. The theme for Earth Hour 2025, 'Switch Off and Secure Water for All,' emphasizes this connection. The event is scheduled to take place from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.
DOE Secretary Raphael Lotilla explained that every kilowatt-hour of electricity consumed requires water for cooling processes in thermal power plants, hydropower systems, or for the energy needed to pump, treat, and distribute water. "Using energy judiciously is not just about reducing consumption-it is about preserving life itself. Every watt saved is a drop of water protected, reinforcing the delicate balance of our environment," Lotilla stated in a statement on Thursday.
Lotilla further emphasized the broader impact of energy efficiency and conservation, stating, "By embracing energy efficiency and conservation, we do more than cutting emissions, we secure the future of our most vital resources for generations to come."
The global event aims to cool down the planet by reducing electricity usage through the simultaneous switching off of non-essential lights and appliances. "Through small but consistent actions, individuals, businesses, and communities can make a lasting impact on energy and water conservation, strengthening climate resilience and promoting a more sustainable way of life," the DOE chief added.
Last year, the Philippines saved 132.11 megawatts of energy during Earth Hour, demonstrating the potential impact of collective action.
