DOH Advocates Enhanced Peer Support Groups for Suicide Prevention

Manila: The Department of Health (DOH) has urged the strengthening of youth-led peer support groups to tackle the increasing demand for mental health services and suicide prevention programs nationwide.

According to Philippines News Agency, the DOH announced via Facebook that it has introduced the DOH Peer Support Groups Playbook in 50 Provincial and City-Wide Health Systems (P/CWHS). The playbook comprises training modules for peer facilitators as well as educational materials designed to promote open dialogues about mental health among the youth.

The DOH emphasized that peer support groups offer safe environments where young individuals can be heard, understood, and included within a supportive community. This initiative aligns with the World Health Organization's (WHO) 2021 findings on the effectiveness of peer-led approaches.

A 2024 National Assessment conducted by the DOH on the Mental Health Literacy of Filipinos revealed that two-thirds of Filipino youth are willing to seek help. The DOH recognized this as an indication that more young people are engaging in conversations and collaboration when dealing with mental health issues.

The DOH also highlighted that this initiative represents a significant step towards providing timely interventions, fostering a culture of empathy, and reducing the stigma associated with mental health challenges.
