DOH Aims for 95% Immunization Rate Against Measles and Rubella in Ilocos Region

Ilocos region: The Department of Health (DOH) 1 is targeting to vaccinate 95 percent of the region's 444,512 children against measles and rubella from August 10 to 28 this year. DOH-1 Regional Director Helen Tobias, during a press conference, confirmed their readiness for the immunization drive.

According to Philippines News Agency, Director Tobias stated, "Our vaccines are already in place; our health workers are prepared, and our partner agencies and volunteers are fully mobilized. Every part of the Ilocos Region is ready to deliver this campaign safely and efficiently." She encouraged parents and guardians to ensure their eligible children receive the vaccination.

Vaccination teams will conduct fixed-site vaccination activities throughout the campaign to ensure that no eligible child is left behind. Dr. Rheuel Bobis, officer-in-charge of DOH-1's Local Health Support Division, highlighted the importance of reaching the 95 percent vaccination rate to achieve 'herd immunity.' He explained that the immunization activity aims to increase vaccination coverage, prevent outbreaks, and provide life-saving protection against measles and rubella for children aged 6 to 59 months.

Of the total children targeted, 42,632 are in Ilocos Norte, 48,683 in Ilocos Sur, 62,585 in La Union, 275,230 in Pangasinan, and 15,382 in Dagupan City. The DOH-1 assured parents and guardians that the measles-rubella vaccine is safe, effective, and available free of charge at government vaccination centers.

Measles is among the most contagious viral diseases and can lead to serious complications, particularly among young children. Rubella infection during pregnancy can cause severe birth defects.
