Manila: Department of Health (DOH) Secretary Teodoro Herbosa emphasized that there is no outbreak of influenza-like illnesses (ILI) in the country, clarifying that the current increase in cases aligns with the usual seasonal flu trend during the colder months. Herbosa reassured the public in an interview that the rise in ILI cases is typical for the season, known locally as the '-ber' months. According to Philippines News Agency, Herbosa stated that there is no outbreak of any type of ILI. He reiterated that the seasonal increase in cases is normal and urged the public to remain cautious. ILIs are characterized by symptoms such as cough, colds, fever, sore throat, and body aches caused by various viruses, unlike the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19), which is caused by a single virus. Herbosa confirmed that the DOH has not reached the threshold to declare an outbreak or epidemic. He advised the public not to be alarmed by reports of increasing absences in schools due to flu-like symptoms. DOH spokesperson Albert Domingo reported that the number of ILI cases from January to September this year was 121,716, marking an 8-percent decrease from last year's 135,538 cases during the same period. The clarification followed the Department of Education-National Capital Region's decision to suspend face-to-face classes in all public schools due to rising ILI cases among students and staff. Herbosa acknowledged that the suspension could help minimize transmission if coordinated with health authorities. He pointed out that the suspension created unnecessary alarm due to a lack of coordination. The DepEd cited additional reasons for suspending classes, including safety inspections after recent earthquakes and sanitization of school facilities, both of which the DOH supports. Herbosa noted an increase in sales of common flu medications like paracetamol, decongestants, and expectorants during the seasonal rise in flu activity. He reminded the public to continue practicing preventive measures learned during the Covid-19 pan demic, such as regular hand washing, staying home when sick, wearing masks when symptomatic, avoiding sharing food and utensils, and ensuring proper indoor ventilation. For those not sick, he advised taking Vitamin C, staying hydrated, maintaining a balanced diet, getting enough rest, exercising, and avoiding crowded places. Herbosa explained that the rainy season contributes to the spread of flu-like symptoms, as people gather in enclosed spaces with poor ventilation. The DOH continues to monitor ILI trends nationwide and assures the public that the situation is under control.
