DOH Delivers Critical Health Supplies to Mayon Volcano-Affected Areas

Albay: The Department of Health in Bicol (DOH-5) has provided essential health supplies to local government units (LGUs) in Albay province affected by heavy ashfall from Mayon Volcano.

According to Philippines News Agency, DOH-5 Director Rose Rempillo announced that health commodities, including face masks, essential medicines, and jerry cans filled with potable water, were delivered to the municipalities of Camalig and Guinobatan. The distribution included 20,000 pieces of face masks, 1,200 N95 masks, two nebulizer units, 1,000 salbutamol nebules, 1,350 jerry cans of water, and an additional 2,000 pieces of face masks for the Office of Civil Defense (OCD).

Rempillo further noted that a 24/7 DOH-local government unit operations center is in operation, with standby medical stations available in various evacuation centers. Medical teams have conducted on-site visits to these centers, and disease surveillance is ongoing, particularly for respiratory conditions tied to ashfall exposure.

Residents are advised to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel. For those needing to go outside, wearing protective masks such as N95 or surgical masks is urged to guard against fine ash particles. Households are encouraged to keep windows and doors closed, use damp curtains, and regularly clear ash from roofs to prevent structural damage. Protective gear like goggles is recommended to prevent eye irritation, and contact lenses should be avoided.

The DOH emphasizes the importance of frequent handwashing, covering food and water sources, and ensuring the cleanliness and safety of food for consumption. Individuals facing difficulty breathing, eye irritation, or other health concerns should seek immediate medical consultation. Authorities continue to call for alertness and cooperation as response operations are ongoing in the affected areas.
