Bacolod: The Corazon Locsin Montelibano Memorial Regional Hospital (CLMMRH) here has established dedicated adult and pediatric wards for leptospirosis patients amid the rise in cases of the infectious disease.

According to Philippines News Agency, the CLMMRH issued a public advisory stating that it is "experiencing a rise in leptospirosis referrals, including moderate to severe cases, particularly from south Negros Occidental." The hospital is prioritizing severe leptospirosis cases and has set up dedicated adult and pediatric wards to ensure timely and appropriate care.

Data from the hospital, which serves as the apex hospital of the Department of Health (DOH) in the Negros Island Region, indicates an increase to eight leptospirosis admissions as of Sunday. This number is significantly higher compared to the usual zero to two cases in a month. The surge in cases follows the devastating flashfloods that impacted several cities and municipalities in central and southern Negros during Typhoon Tino on November 4.

Leptospirosis is a bacterial infection caused by leptospira spirochetes, contracted from exposure to water or soil contaminated by the urine of infected animals, particularly rats. The infection can occur through cuts, wounds, abrasions, or any break in the skin. Local health authorities urge individuals to take prophylaxis promptly following exposure or consult the nearest health center or private physician for a prescription.

The CLMMRH has advised referring facilities to coordinate with its operations center and adhere to proper patient coordination and transfer protocols. The hospital management emphasized its commitment to providing compassionate, high-quality care, especially during surge situations, and called for continued understanding and cooperation from referring facilities and the public as they manage bed capacity and ensure timely care for all affected patients.
