DOH in Ilocos Region Raises Code White Alert for Holy Week

Manila: The Department of Health (DOH) in the Ilocos Region has announced a code white alert from April 13 to 20 across all hospitals and health facilities in the region for the observance of Holy Week.

According to Philippines News Agency, this alert ensures that all health facilities and medical personnel, particularly those in emergency rooms and critical care units, are prepared to address a potential rise in patient volume due to accidents, injuries, or other health-related incidents during the Lenten season. The DOH Ilocos emphasized their commitment to monitoring health events closely and coordinating with regional and local health facilities to guarantee a synchronized and efficient response to any emergencies that may occur.

The alert status is a precautionary measure to prepare for any health-related incidents expected during this period. DOH Ilocos Regional Director Paula Paz Sydiongco urged residents returning to their provinces and tourists visiting for vacations to prioritize a healthy and safe observance of both Holy Week and the summer vacation, known locally as SumVac.

"Semana Santa is one of the longest holidays in the country and is a popular time for family gatherings and visiting significant places. It is important to plan and be ready for safe travel and Holy Week celebration with family," Sydiongco stated. She provided advice on staying safe and healthy during the Lenten season, such as staying hydrated to prevent dehydration and heatstroke, especially as some areas are experiencing high heat indices, and minimizing sun exposure.

Sydiongco also recommended using umbrellas when unavoidable sun exposure occurs and avoiding dark-colored clothing, which attracts heat. Instead, she suggested wearing bright, comfortable clothing to maintain health and safety during the holiday period.
