DOH Provides Medications and Sets Up Tents for Metro Manila LGUs Amid ‘Opong’

Manila: The Department of Health-Metro Manila Center for Health Development (DOH-MMCHD) on Friday ramped up its emergency response efforts to safeguard the health and safety of residents in Metro Manila as Severe Tropical Storm Opong (international name Bualoi) brings strong winds and heavy rains. In coordination with local government units (LGUs), the DOH-MMCHD assured the public that cities and municipalities across Metro Manila are prepared to implement emergency measures.

According to Philippines News Agency, key interventions include the establishment of tents to serve as evacuation sites, distribution of essential medicines to health centers, and deployment of medical teams for quick response to affected residents. The initiative follows President R. Ferdinand Marcos Jr.'s directive to guarantee access to immediate health services for all communities, particularly during calamities.

Earlier, the DOH said nearly 95,000 individuals have taken shelter in evacuation centers following the onslaught of consecutive typhoons Mirasol and Nando, including Opong, which is currently in the vicinity of San Jose, Occidental Mindoro as of 1 p.m. Friday. It warned that an unclean environment could lead to various illnesses such as leptospirosis, dengue, and diarrhea.

The public is reminded to maintain cleanliness, especially while staying in evacuation centers. Evacuees and evacuation center managers were advised to dispose of garbage properly, separate biodegradable from non-biodegradable waste, use personal reusable utensils whenever possible, and report if trash bins are full or place waste in designated areas. "Strict implementation of cleanliness is protection against diseases and protection for the whole community," the DOH said.
