DOH Renews Call for Safe Holiday Practices to Protect Health and Safety

Valenzuela: The Department of Health-Metro Manila Center for Health Development (DOH-MMCHD) on Friday renewed its call for the public to support the 'Ligtas Christmas 2025' campaign aimed at ensuring a safe celebration of Christmas and New Year holidays. The agency underscored the need to avoid common holiday 'bad habits' that pose risks to health and safety.

According to Philippines News Agency, DOH-MMCHD Regional Director Lester Tan emphasized the importance of not allowing health to suffer due to unsafe practices during the holidays. Speaking at the campaign launch in Valenzuela City, Tan said, "The true spirit of Christmas is not measured by extravagant feasts and vices, but by safety, discipline, and care for one another."

The agency warned against unhealthy behaviors such as excessive consumption of sweets, salty, fatty, and oily foods, which can lead to hypertension, diabetes, and heart disease. They also cautioned against heavy alcohol intake, smoking and vaping, lack of physical activity, and sleep deprivation due to extended gatherings and screen time.

Data from the DOH-MMCHD Regional Epidemiology and Surveillance Section showed significant health concerns in the National Capital Region, including high numbers of adults with hypertension, Type 2 diabetes, overweight or obese individuals, binge drinkers, and smokers. Additionally, the region reported an increase in fireworks-related injuries during the previous holiday season.

To address these issues, the DOH-MMCHD is promoting healthier celebrations through the 'TED' initiative-Tamang Pagkain, Ehersisyo, at Disiplina. This includes reducing intake of unhealthy foods, avoiding excessive alcohol, maintaining regular meal schedules, and practicing safe food handling.

For safer travel, the agency reiterated the 'BiyaHealthy' reminders, focusing on vehicle readiness and safe driving practices. They advised against driving when sleepy or intoxicated, emphasized the use of helmets and seatbelts, and discouraged gadget use while driving.

Under the 'Iwas Paputok' initiative, communities are encouraged to opt for organized fireworks displays and safe alternatives to firecrackers. The department also urged local government units across Metro Manila to intensify information campaigns and enforce ordinances that enhance public safety.

Tan highlighted the crucial role of local government units in ensuring a safe and healthy Christmas, advocating for strong ordinance enforcement and active community participation to protect public health.

The agency concluded by stressing that breaking unhealthy holiday habits is essential for building healthier individuals and more resilient communities during the festive season.
