DOJ Asserts No Special Treatment for Deported Ex-Lawmaker Teves

Quezon City: Former Negros Oriental 3rd District Representative Arnulfo Teves Jr., who was recently deported from Timor-Leste, is not receiving any special treatment in detention, an official from the Department of Justice (DOJ) stated.

According to Philippines News Agency, Teves is currently being held at the National Bureau of Investigation's (NBI) detention facility within the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) compound in Muntinlupa. This arrangement is temporary, pending a court decision regarding his permanent detention location. Justice Undersecretary Raul Vasquez clarified during a news forum in Quezon City that Teves' current detention at the NBI facility is due to ongoing construction at the NBI building on Taft Avenue.

Teves is facing several criminal charges, including the assassination of former Negros Oriental governor Roel Degamo in 2023, along with other murder cases from 2019. Vasquez commended the collaboration between Timor-Leste and the Philippines, which led to Teves' deportation.

The Timor-Leste government announced on May 28 that it had decided to deport and ban Teves for 10 years, citing him as a "threat to national security and interests" and a "disruptive factor" in its relations with the Philippines. This decision followed more than two months after the Philippine government, through the Department of Foreign Affairs, expressed dissatisfaction over Timor-Leste's initial refusal to extradite Teves.
