Manila: Department of Justice (DOJ) Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla announced that the prosecutors' initial evaluation of the case concerning the missing 'sabungeros' (cockfight enthusiasts) is anticipated to be completed shortly. This could pave the way for a formal preliminary investigation if the evidence collected thus far justifies such action.
According to Philippines News Agency, Remulla expressed optimism about the progress of the evaluation in a recent interview, stating that while the initial 10-day period may be extended, efforts are being made to finalize the evaluation promptly. He indicated that subpoenas would be issued to relevant parties as the case moves forward to preliminary investigation.
The potential inclusion of whistleblower Julie 'Dondon' Patidongan as a government witness remains uncertain until the case reaches a judicial stage. Patidongan has alleged that a covert group of influential business figures orchestrated the demise of the 'sabungeros' and disposed of their bodies in Taal Lake, Batangas province. Partial skeletal remains have been retrieved and are currently undergoing forensic analysis.
Remulla emphasized the potential significance of testimonies from Patidongan's brothers, Jose and Elakim. Both brothers reportedly fled the country, captured on security footage utilizing the bank cards of one of the missing individuals. Jose Patidongan is currently serving a sentence for an unrelated case. Despite this, efforts are ongoing to secure his testimony, which could considerably strengthen the case. Elakim, who has already provided a statement, along with Dondon's testimony, contributes to a robust case, although Jose's input is deemed crucial.
