Manila: Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla announced that the search for the remains of missing cockfight enthusiasts, known as 'sabungeros,' allegedly disposed of in Taal Lake, is set to begin this week. Despite recent volcanic activity, efforts to conduct technical dives and bed mapping in the lake are moving forward.
According to Philippines News Agency, Remulla emphasized the importance of starting the search imminently, stating that the initial plan involves mapping the lake and assessing conditions to strategize the search process. The investigation is also focusing on fishponds reportedly linked to individuals identified in the ongoing probe.
Julie "Dondon" Patidongan, also known as Totoy, previously alleged that the disappearances were orchestrated by a syndicate controlling the lucrative cockfight industry, which expanded significantly when it transitioned online during the pandemic. The syndicate, referred to as the "Alpha" group, is said to consist of 20 influential businessmen and investors who dominate every aspect of these events.
Remulla noted that one suspect has a fishpond lease, designating it as the starting point for the investigation. He acknowledged the challenges posed by the lake's sediment layers and murky waters but expressed confidence in the accuracy of the gathered clues indicating the lake as a possible dumping ground for the missing individuals.
In a related development, Remulla mentioned discussions with Supreme Court justices regarding an alleged lobbying group that includes a retired judge allegedly acting as a fixer in legal cases tied to the cockfight industry. He assured that the justices are actively investigating the matter, demonstrating commitment to enhancing the justice system.
Remulla highlighted ongoing collaboration with the justice sector coordinating council, emphasizing the Supreme Court's crucial role in efforts to improve the judicial framework.
