DOJ Investigates Links Between Missing Sabungeros and Drug War Deaths

Manila: Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla announced that investigators are exploring potential connections between individuals implicated in the disappearance of 'sabungeros' (cockfight aficionados) and extrajudicial killings during the previous administration's war on drugs. Remulla stated that the deaths may intersect with death squads and contractual killers associated with the drug war and e-sabong. The investigation aims to establish clearer links between these cases.

According to Philippines News Agency, the ongoing search in Taal Lake in Batangas City is expected to extend indefinitely. Technical divers from the Philippine Coast Guard recently searched parts of the lake bed for the remains of missing 'sabungeros' reportedly dumped there. Whistleblower Julie Patidongan, alias Totoy, claimed that over 100 bodies were disposed of in the lake, indicating a possible routine practice linked to both e-sabong and the drug war.

Remulla mentioned that the DOJ plans to contact forensic pathologist Raquel Fortun to assist in processing any remains recovered. Fortun, currently on medical furlough, is expected to lead the Philippine Forensics Institute. The DOJ is coordinating with the Philippine National Police crime lab for the identification of possible remains.

Addressing critics, Remulla dismissed claims that partisan politics are driving the investigation. He emphasized that the justice system is on trial and that the investigation seeks to confront systemic issues. Remulla criticized political tactics that aim to undermine progress, asserting that it is time to address these challenges.
