Manila: The Department of Foreign Affairs is moving to cancel the passport of former presidential spokesperson Harry Roque, Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla said on Monday. The cancellation aims to restrict Roque's travel options, particularly as he faces legal issues in the Philippines.
According to Philippines News Agency, Remulla highlighted that the cancellation would force Roque to remain accountable for his alleged actions. Roque is facing qualified human trafficking charges associated with a Philippine offshore gaming operator (POGO) hub in Porac, Pampanga. Currently, he is seeking political asylum in the Netherlands.
Without a valid passport, Remulla noted, Roque would be considered an undocumented alien and could face deportation if asylum is denied by the Dutch government. Remulla expressed skepticism about the asylum approval, noting that the Netherlands is staunchly against human trafficking, the charge Roque is facing.
Additionally, Remulla mentioned that hold departure orders have been issued against Roque's co-accused to prevent them from fleeing the country. The Justice Secretary emphasized the necessity of these orders, particularly as several foreigners are involved and are required to appear in court to answer the charges against them.
