DOJ Opposes Bail for Accused in Missing ‘Sabungeros’ Case

Manila: The Department of Justice (DOJ) on Tuesday reiterated its opposition to the granting of bail to those accused in the disappearance case of missing 'sabungeros' (cockfight enthusiasts) before the San Pablo, Laguna, and Manila Regional Trial Courts (RTC).

According to Philippines News Agency, Chief State Prosecutor Richard Anthony Fadullon stated that despite the accused elevating the matter to the Supreme Court, the DOJ's position remains that bail should not have been granted. He emphasized that all accused individuals should be apprehended.

Several individuals, including three policemen and whistleblower Julie Patidongan, also known as Totoy, have been released temporarily on bail in the two separate cases. The DOJ is currently appealing the bail granted to Patidongan and five others in connection with their alleged involvement in the incident at the Manila Arena. Prosecutors are also preparing a motion for reconsideration concerning the recent bail granted by the Laguna RTC.

Fadullon indicated that the department is committed to pursuing a motion for reconsideration and exploring further legal options. Regarding Patidongan, who alleged that the bodies of the missing sabungeros were disposed of in Taal Lake, Fadullon mentioned that his statements are under evaluation.

Despite Patidongan's status as a whistleblower, he remains an accused in the case. Fadullon noted that all disclosed information is still undergoing validation and evaluation by enforcement authorities. He added that efforts are ongoing to build the case and verify the information provided by Alias Totoy.
