Manila: The Department of Justice (DOJ) has expressed its opposition to any motion that seeks to lift the hold departure order against Senator Jinggoy Estrada, emphasizing that the decision rests with the Manila Regional Trial Court (RTC). Estrada has reportedly sought permission from the Sandiganbayan to travel abroad for personal reasons during Holy Week, despite the precautionary hold departure order (PHDO) issued against him by Manila RTC Branch 52 in February.

According to Philippines News Agency, DOJ spokesperson Polo Martinez stated that the judiciary must resolve the issue, noting that the Manila RTC had jurisdiction in issuing the PHDO. Martinez underscored that the PHDO is a court order and can only be revoked by the court that issued it. The DOJ maintains its stance that Estrada is a flight risk and should not be allowed to leave the country.

Martinez further mentioned that the DOJ would oppose any motion to lift the PHDO, citing sufficient grounds for its continued enforcement. He confirmed that the DOJ would file an opposition if the Sandiganbayan requests their comment on the matter. Estrada, along with officials from the Department of Public Works and Highways, including former secretary Manuel Bonoan, faces plunder charges filed by the National Bureau of Investigation related to alleged irregularities in flood control projects.
